I haven't posted much recently because I've been either out of town or busy getting ready for fall semester, plus I've felt guilty about posting when I'm massively behind on responding to comments on old posts and feedback. I hope maybe this weekend, since I won't be out of town and net-less.

But I did want to post about Snupin Santa before sign-ups close! Sign-ups for Snupin Santa 2008 are here on insanejournal and here on livejournal. Sign-ups close on August 22 at midnight PST (-8 GMT) with assignments to go out no later than August 30.

If anyone who wasn't reading this journal last year is interested, I wrote about the process of running Snupin Santa in a series of posts; it'll be pretty much the same this year, except I have helpers this time, which is already making things much easier.

Also, I'm giving serious consideration to participating in snapelyholidays, which is an exchange for Snape-centric het, slash, and gen. I'm debating about it because I'm working on my story for livelongnmarry which - naturally - is not turning out short, and I'm participating in Snupin Santa because I spotted a prompt that has caused plot bunnies to sink their teeth into my flesh and cling with the tenacity of a leech, so that's two things due by the end of October. But the snapelyholidays deadline isn't until November 14, so I might could do it if things don't happen like they did last year (lengthy illness followed by strained shoulder muscles) when I was trying to write for holiday fests.

Anyway, the info is here if any Snape fans on my flist are also intrigued.

I haven't done recs in a while, but I've seen some gorgeous art that I really liked recently. All of them are Snape/Lupin.

First, ghot drew The Primal Dance (NWS), which is based on Paso Doble. arionrhod commissioned it, but I get to share in the hotness. :D It captures the intensity and emotion of the scene perfectly, and the lines of their bodies are just gorgeous.

nepenth drew Memoirs of a Wizard Geisha (cross-dressing), which is sketchy, but evocative and emotional, and the details on Severus' kimono are amazing.

karasu_hime drew The Kiss (mildly NWS), which is beautifully colored and a brilliant tribute to the original work that has a definite, recognizable RL/SS spin on it.

And serpenscript drew an untitled piece, which is very cute and reminds me of anime. The patterns on the clothes and the use of color is particularly nice here.

One of the downloaded versions worked, so I watched L: Change the World. I didn't like it. That is, I didn't dislike it either. Just neither here nor there.

IMO, nobody needed this 'humanisation of L' because he's quite lovely as he is. On the other hand, I don't object to it either. In the circumstances of L's life when the film takes place, I can believe he'd act as he acts in it.

I seriously disliked that the premise has to do with a virus. Yucky! But there were two things I liked. Firstly, it's just a good excuse for seeing L in all his glory for two more hours, half-moon-shaped back and all. And secondly, the very last, closing picture. Cliché but nice and poetic anyway.

TIFF just announced its guest list.

Best meme/game I've seen in a long time! It's fun, educational, and definitely for a good cause. Still, geography has always been my weakest non-science subject, and it shows :). I guess if I play this long enough (and it sure is addictive!), I'll get a lot better at it ;).

Well, I've now attended my first day of Art History and African American History classes.

Um. Hmmm.

Okay.

The "most important goal" for my Art History teacher is to teach the students how to be comfortable talking about art (say, at a party, which was an actual example she used, omg, save me).

Great. I'm ahead of the game, here. Good.

European art is the only stuff we're covering, though, so the interesting stuff in the textbook? Not covered.

African American History promises to be... well, more interesting. Not necessarily because of the subject matter (which I suspect will be ... politically correct at best), but because the student body will be amusingly predictable. *sigh* We had to answer two questions today, on paper: 1) What three or four topics do we think it is important for the class to cover and 2) What do we hope to gain from the class. I assumed that the answer to question 2 was not "An A".

Now I'm home, dropping off my computer (it looks like I won't be using it in class this semester, except for the online class), and soon I'm off to pick up Merrie at camp. I don't have to be in class at Merritt until 6:30; I might just go to campus and hang out. Not that campus is so terrifyingly interesting, but I know that I'll find it impossible to leave the house a third time today.

I have work stuff to think about, as well, so I should probably spend the time working on numbers and other scary things.

Okay. I've now finished the first three Twilight novels, and, because I'm a sucker for punishment, am halfway through "Breaking Dawn" as well.

Seriously, though, I was curious. I mean, given how abysmally bad even book 1 was, I couldn't help wondering how much worse book 4 must be if even people who loved the first three were ready to rip Smeyer a new one after reading it.

Of course, the only way to find out was to read the entirety of the damned thing, and I'm telling you, there'd better be a sparkling Purple Heart waiting for me when I'm done.

I think I can safely say this much already, though: Throughout the amassed badness of the first three books, there were a few scenes that I think I might have liked when I was, say, twelve years old. Of course they were usually immediately followed by things that would have made me spit nails even at age twelve (or perhaps particularly at age twelve, when teenage rebelliousness was kicking in full force), but overall, I think an professional editor armed with a chainsaw, an awareness of gender issues, a grasp of basic earth logic, and the willingness to beat the authorial ego into submission would have been able to hack away at the combined contents of books 1-3 until they ended up with one single volume of somewhat bearable teenybopper vampire romancing.

Book 4, however, is an utterly lost cause. I wouldn't have thought it possible before, but I guess I can see what all the ex-fans are on about – even after three volumes of pointless sparkling and undead patronising, this is still a totally different level of badness. I just – wow. Congrats, Mrs Meyer, you made me speechless, and I haven't even got to the dentally assisted c-section yet.

On the other hand, I honestly can't wait until the movie comes out. I'm gonna rupture something in the movie theatre when RPatz starts sparkling, I just know it. Pity they'll probably never get to filming book 4, because I so want to see him bite that pillow…

On a side note, German speakers on my flist, have you seen the titles of the German translations? "Bis(s) zum Morgengrauen"? The pun, it burnsssssssss ussssssssss!

Didn't get any work done yesterday, I am going to be so glad when school starts in a few weeks. (rubs hands with glee when thinking of how much time I will have, sadly, money will probably be lacking, and I still have to spend 3+ hours driving the spouse back and forth to work.

Someday he'll get a licence.

Today is a day to try to get some writing done, my Angeal/Zack is bogged down with plot, and Sephiroth walked in on the scene and refuses to leave, which may mean, this needs another tack - I tend to write my fics these days with info in the beginning for those who don't know the fandom, cos I'd like anyone to be able to read my stuff, and it's how you write original fiction, but I don't want to be Basil Exposition.

Fidget Fidget Fret.

Maybe I just need to write the damn things for me, like I used to, and not be concerned with all this Performance Anxiety.
